About NumberingData

What this site is, who runs it, where the data comes from and what it deliberately does not do.

What this is

NumberingData is a reference for North American phone numbering. For any area code it answers the questions people actually ask: where is it, how full is it, who holds the numbers, is a call from it likely to be spam, and is a new code coming.

Everything on it is built from primary records – the numbering administrators' own files and the FTC's complaint data – and every page names the sources it used with the date they were retrieved.

Who runs it

This is an independent project: a reference built from public records, not a company selling anything. Nobody pays to be included, excluded or ranked here, there is no advertising, and no carrier or regulator reviews these pages before they go up.

What stands behind a figure here is not an institution but a method you can repeat: every page names the file it came from and the date it was retrieved, the aggregates are published as downloads, and the code that produces them does the same thing every time it runs. If a number here disagrees with the source, the source wins – tell us and the page gets a dated correction.

Where the numbers come from

What we deliberately do not do

We do not identify people. A lookup here returns carrier, line type, region and complaint history. It never returns a name or an address, we do not build profiles, and we do not link to services that do.

We do not publish a figure we have not verified. Insurance deductibles and claim deadlines are things people act on with their own money. A carrier page goes live only after a person has read the current terms on that carrier's own site. The alternative – filling gaps with industry averages or numbers copied from aggregators – produces pages that look authoritative and are wrong.

We do not treat complaint counts as proof. Spam callers fake the number they display. A heavily complained-about area code is one that gets imitated, not one whose residents are calling you.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it with a dated note on the page.

We do not host user reports about individual numbers. Publishing one person's claim about someone else's number needs a moderator reading every submission and answering removal requests the same week, and a reference site run this way has nobody to do that. The lookup tool still tells you the carrier, the line type and what the public complaint data says about the area code – none of which is anybody's accusation.
